St Valery

By Anonymous on Saturday, June 05, 2004 - 10:23 am:

Can any one supply the words to this old support company song ,it used to be sung by Tom McCutchen of the Chunkies, I last heard it sung by him in the canteen in St Mathews Chapel in Belfast not long after we lost the boys at Ligonelle , keep well all regards H.

By Tom McGuinness on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 04:56 pm:

C/Sgt Digger Devine used to sing it.

Last heard him sing it when he was a PSI with 1/52 Lowland. Many years ago now

By Rab (Theguvnor216) on Saturday, April 08, 2006 - 03:57 pm:

the topic St Valery, whats it about, is it about a World War 1 battle, or is it about the men left behind at Dunkirk, good to see former RSM Young on the board, pity we aint seen harry roy around.

By Dave (Daviehowe) on Saturday, April 08, 2006 - 04:50 pm:

St Valery was not a Sp Coy song. It was a song about the Highland Div who fell on the beaches during WW2. In mydays it was sung by the old soldiers when we used to have a sing-song in the NAAFI or wherever. I'm afraid I don't know the complete song, only bits and pieces here and there!

Hi Rab. Correct. The song also pays tribute to the ships that came across to rescue the survivors. For the anon who wanted the words of the song, John McCrimmon may be able to help. His father was around in those days.

Try doing this Adam

step 1

make sure you know where to locate the picture you want to post, i.e my pictures/documents/desktop etc

step 2

start with a back slash \followed by the word image.....\image

immediatley after you have typed image you need to put in a open bracket...the fancy one {immediatley followed by the text my picture

{my picture and close the bracket}

then click on preview/post message button

\image

{my picture

the last two lines above should appear as one on your screen, if i join them together the PC thinks i am posting an image. Your image will then appear on the forum after it has been posted.

FYI I hope this is the words you are after:

Ginge

The Beaches Of St Valéry

It was in 1940 the last days of Spring

We were sent to the Maginot line

A fortress in France built to halt the advance of an army from a different time

For we were soon overrun out-fought and outgunned

Pushed further back every day

But we never believed high command would leave us

So we fought every inch of the way

Till the 51st Highlanders found themselves on the banks of the Somme one more time

It still bore the scars of that war to end wars

The old soldiers scars deep in their minds

But we couldn't stay long for the Panzers rolled on

And the battle raged west towards the sea

Then on June the 10th when sapped of all strength

I entered St Valéry

Chorus

And all I recall was the last boat leavin!

My brother on board waving and calling to me

And the Jocks stranded there wi' their hands in the air

On the beaches of St Valéry

So I huddled all night in a hammered old house

As the shells and the bullets rained down

Next morning at dawn my hope was still strong

For we moved to the beach from the town

But the boat that had left on the day we arrived

Was the only one we'd ever see

And with no ammo or food we had done all we could

So we surrendered at St Valéry

Chorus

When I returned at the end of the war

From the stalag where I'd been confined

I read of the battles the allies had fought

Stalingrad, Alamein, and the Rhine

Wi' pride in their hearts people spoke of Dunkirk where defeat had become victory

But nobody mentioned the Highland Division

They'd never heard of St Valéry

Chorus

No stories no statues for those that were killed

No honours for those that were caught

Just a deep sense of shame as though we were to blame

Though I knew in my heart we were not.

So I've moved to a country I've come to call home

But my homeland is far o'er the sea

I will never return while my memories still burn

On the beaches of St Valéry

By Willie Morham (Kungfu) on Sunday, April 09, 2006 - 03:58 pm:

Also a poem (by anon) of the same:

Down by St. Valery

The Highland Division, they fought and they fell

Although they were battered by shot and by shell

Yet they were determined to fight and go free

Down by St. Valery

That night on the cliff tops, I'll never forget

As we lay on the ground and it was soaking wet

These memories will ever last for aye

Down by St. Valery

The planes high above us kept dropping their bombs

When we on the ground kept on singing our songs

They thought they had got us, but they were wrong

Down by St. Valery

Then far out to sea, we spied the Boys in Blue

Came for to carry us home

There's a debt that we owe them we can never repay

There's a debt we will owe them for many a day

And each night in our prayers we will always say

God Bless the Boys in Blue

By Dave (Daviehowe) on Sunday, April 09, 2006 - 05:18 pm:

Ginge, the poem is the one I know (sic). Well done, you are a champion.

By Sandy Leishman (Sandy) on Monday, April 10, 2006 - 12:46 pm:

Morning men,

great to see you all helping each other out with the pictures... makes my life a lot easier (whatya mean am a lazy B'stard!)

I've had to limit the size of the files cause we have reached our limit on the server and they're asking for more money but the boss has veoto'ed that idea. the easiest we to reduce the size is using one of the photo applications (adobe etc)try this:

open your photo

click file and save as

save as jpeg

if it gives you a box for save as copy click this

if it gives you the option to save size save as the smallest (its usualy max med small)

if you're really stuck send it as an attachement to the RHQ and I'll have a go at reducing it and posting it... but be warned if I'm busy or on leave it can lay for a wee bit

for Adam

sorry for not having your tipple at the function mate but wee seem to be having problems with aol (ie not everything is coming or going via them from here) hope it didnae ruin yr night

Hi Wullie

Cheers that may well happen, by the way Inverness is freezing, windy and wet, but it was great to see Jimmy, Margaret and Lee-Ann, big Jamie was nt there, he was away to Holland playing football in a european youth competion, unluckly his team got beat by the winners and came second, no shame in that Jamie, but never the less unlucky.

Cheers Wullie
