Hi Sandy,
I was wondering if you could help me, one of my nephews has been doing a family tree, he came across a photo and put it on facebook, asking who it was, I recognised it as a photo of my dad, his grandad, who served with the R.N.V.R in the first world war, he was in naval uniform, his cap ribbon read, R.N.V.R Clyde, am I right in saying that back then, the R.N.V.R war similar to today's marines ?, because I remember my dad talking about carrying their stores and ammo on mules, ( They wouldn't have been doing that on a ship ) :>) .
Ive got three of his medals, I know he had more, because I used to play with them when I was a kid, but when he died I could only find the three, I believe he was also involved in the Dardanelles campaign, the inscription on his medals read, CZ 2994. F. Sweeny. A.B. R.N.V.R
Is there anyway I can find out more about his time in the navy by using his service number ?.
P.S (I broke a family tradition by going into the HLI, my grandfather , my father, and four brothers where all navy.) |
