Hi James S

Good to hear from you. The Fergie I've listed is, the piper. Joined the army as a Jnr/Ppr in 1965 and arrived at the Bn in the fort 1967. As a youg man he had very prominant ginger hair and a great Piper. Never new him to serve in anything but P&Ds. Not in great shape at present. Take care i'll pass on your regards.

By John Mallon (Johnmallon) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 11:01 am:

John,

About your messsage about Fergie the Piper. I remember him when he was a Junior Soldier in Glencorse. He was a Junior Sergeant at the time and had great prospects for the future. He seemed to change a lot when he reached the Battalion. He was in the same Junior Platoon, as Higgie from 'A' Coy, who brother was also in the Coy. Is Jimmy McKay, Ex Signals Platoon still living in Inverness. Last heard about him running about with Fergie, after he/they were discharged in Inverness.

Regards to all in Inverness who know me, recognise most of the names, some of them bring back memories.

John,

Just reading the message about Sandy Ford. Didn't he transfer into the Regiment from the Royal Signals. He was a "Power Man" in the Scalies, a fancy name for a driver.

By John Hamilton (Rsmjth) on Thursday, August 31, 2006 - 09:30 pm:

Hi John Mallon

You got the correct Fergie. The Higgie Your talking about is Craig Higgins 3Pl who was a Jnr Soldier in the same Pl at the depot as myself and he did have a brother in the Bn. I often went home at weekends with Craig, I'm positive he was try to get his sister and I to go out together, he never succeeded. Anyone hear of Craig these days. As an afterthought I can remember Big Brad punting him in the Fort.

Sandy Ford I thought transfered to R.Sigs from us, I'll ask next time I see him.

A story from my Dad,

One Sunday afternoon in Iserlohn your Dad came to our house in Petzoltzi strasse to see my Dad who was A Coy C/Sgt at the time.

He was pleading the case of one of his mates who had p****ed his mattress and was being fined £20 ( lot of money then).

After a bit of wrangling the two of them disappeared on business only to return suitably oiled a few hours later!.

I wonder if your mum or mine ever guessed that it was a ruse (probably conjured up on the Friday)to get out to Alberts icebar?.

And did the "mate" ever get billed?

By John Hamilton (Rsmjth) on Friday, September 01, 2006 - 08:22 pm:

Hi Davie & Dick

I remember as CQMS in Hemer being told to carry out accomodation check by Cushy. All bedding at the time was held centrally by the QM's. Jaws if any of you remember him was a cook at the time and when he was found to have a urinated mattress proceeded to give me the names of another 6 or 7 who had managed to purchase mattresses for 20 DM from the bedding store but they would'nt sell him one. I won't say who was running the store at the time but the guy who eventually got the blame was Duce Curran and he was running Snow Queen at the time down in Bavaria. How he got the blame I will never know. The real culprit walked away as usual without a mention. Those who had the mattresses got fined £110 each.

I remember the last day in Middletown 1980 I was found to have a soiled mattress which wasn't soiled when I got up!

I knew exactly who had swapped mattresses but trying to prove it was another matter.

In the end up Bubbles McMenemy made me sign for a pair of coveralls. A lesson learned in watching all your kit.

With ref. to Iserlohn we lived in Mozart Str. as I'm sure you'll remember, was just around the corner from you???

I thought it was one of the best places we had a posting to and had a great time there.

I also joined the Army there and was sworn in by Big Peter Larg. I'll never forget the delight on his face when he realised I was joining 1RHF.

John,

Aye your right there.

We originally stayed in thr big flats and then got big Kisbees msq. Number 32 if I remember correctly.

What a garden we had, and I spent manys a happy afternoon hosing down the German kids that came to "scrump" our apple and cherry trees. We never got on well with them anyway.

Do you remember when us kids took on the Coldstream Guards at football? (1965 ish) We beat them 4-2.

Jimmy King Jnr was also in the team with Willie Gilmour as manager?

Good Evening Dick

I personally was'nt at the match. But my brother Wullie played and as I remember he was dragged out of bed by the Big Man, I was'nt good enough. Did Bernt Jones the brother of Jill who is married to Jimmy Hickson play in goal? Bernt's dad was a SSGT at Brigade but ran around with us lot. Still comes up to Inverness to visit Jimmy & Jill, a bit to heavy for goal now.

JTH

By Dick Davidson (Dickdavidson) on Saturday, September 02, 2006 - 08:37 pm:

Evening John

I can't remember if Bernt was playing but the two memories I have of the match are, firstly, we were playing in the mens kit that made us wee boys look like something out of a disaster zone and secondly I'm positive it was your brother wullie who hit a shot that went screaming through the side netting and ended up in the back of the net.

The referee wasn't sure so he asked the Jocks behind the goal if it was in - you can guess their answer!!!!

Good Morning Dick

I had just joined the army having been sworn in by Maj Peter Larg. Previous to leaving for SID Glencorse I worked for Heinrich Shulte und Sonn which was the factory behind the Bn football field. It was still there two years ago as were all our houses, sadly, not the same can be said for Mons Bks. I think I departed for Glencorse around the 20th April.
