Discharged after 1920

Researching Soldiers who were discharged from the Army after 1920

The Royal Highland Fusiliers (RHF) Museum offers a full research service for all soldiers who have served in the RHF and antecedent regiments, including:  The Royal Scots Fusiliers (RSF); The Highland Light Infantry (HLI); 21st of Foot; 71st & 74th Highlanders.

However, our research team cannot access military records for service personnel who were discharged from the army after 1920, as these records are retained by the Ministry of Defence.

The service record produced by the Ministry of Defence is usually a very basic document containing all the dates of postings and theatres in which the soldier served – this information is vital for our researchers to access other information that may be available to give a fuller picture of the soldier’s military service

We, therefore, CANNOT, accept an enquiry in respect of a soldier who was discharged after 1920 unless his service record is enclosed with the completed enquiry form.

The only exception is soldiers who served in WWI, some of whom were discharged after 1920.

For soldiers who served in WWI and then re-enlisted later e.g. for WWII, we can only research the WWI service unless their service records for subsequent service are enclosed with the completed enquiry form.

To access a deceased soldier’s records:

  • You have the consent of their immediate next of kin
  • You have a general research interest – you will only have access to limited information, unless the soldier died more than 25 years ago
  • Soldiers, who are still alive, can access their own records – for which we understand there is no charge
